'Steppin' it Up is werkelijk een prachtig document. John Lawton op zijn best begeleid door Steve Dunning, zijn vaste bassist. Steve heeft John enorm geinspireerd door zijn virtuose basspel en wat dit talent allemaal nog meer vermag. De CD is samengesteld uit een aantal Uriah Heep songs uit de periode dat John Lawton in Heep de microfoon hanteerde, en hoogtepunten uit zijn repertoir met Lucifers Friend en GunHill. Phil Lanzon ( Uriah Heep), Steve Simmons ( Karnataka) Erol Sora ( gitaar) en Rick Stockwell ( percussion) hielpen een handje

De Heepnummers zijn stuk voor stuk juweeltjes geworden. Geen distorsion gitaargeluid dit maal en ook ontbreekt het gorgelende hammond orgel.  Daarvoor in de plaats luister je naar zeer verzorgde, zeg maar laid back, soms zelfs Jazzy  uitvoeringen van o.a.Feelings, Firefly/Comeback to me, Wiseman, Rain, I'm a Live , & One more night. Met name One More Night swingt de pan uit. Het samenvoegen van Firefly en Come back to me levert het beste op wat ik in jaren van John heb gehoord. En geloof me ik heb veel gehoord:-)

A schoulder to cry on bewijst no maar eens hoe John in staat is een ballad te zingen. Wie kan er die emotie in leggen, alleen hij toch?

Tonight komt ook voor op John's 'Paying my dues to the blues' album. Hier echter krijgt het nummer, wat ooit bedoeld was voor het vierde album van Heep met John, een extra dimensie door het subtiele gitaarwerk van Erol Sora en het melodieuze basspel van Steve.

Op alle songs klinken de klassieke close harmony koortjes als een zoete herkenning door mijn heep-oren.

Burning Ships & Still Paying my dues zijn John op het lijf geschreven songs. Blues...hartverscheurende blues, zoals alleen John dat kan zingen.

‘Steppin’ It Up’ is a truly beautiful document. John Lawton at his best, accompanied by Steve Dunning, his steady bass player. Steve has inspired John enormously by his virtuous bass playing and whatever else this talent has the power to. The CD is composed of a number of Uriah Heep songs from the era that John Lawton handled the mike in Heep as well as highlights from his repertory of Lucifers Friend and Gunhill. Phil Lanzon (Uriah Heep), Steve Simmons (Karnataka), Erol Sora (guitar) and Rock Stockwell (percussion) helped out.

The Heep songs have become gems. No guitar distortion sound this time and also the Hammond sound lacks. Instead you hear very well taken care of, call it laid back, sometimes even jazzy performances of Feelings, Firefly/Come Back To Me, Wiseman, Rain, I’m Alive and One More Night, to name a few. Especially One More Night rocks you off your feet. Linking up Firefly and Come Back To Me has yielded the best from John which I’ve heard over the years. Believe me, I have heard a LOT :-)

A Shoulder To Cry on proves once more that John is capable of singing a ballad. Who else can put that emotion in a song but he? Tonight is also featured on John's 'Paying my dues to the blues' album. Here though , the song which was meant for Heep’s fourth album with John, gets an extra dimension due to the subtle guitar work by Erol Sora and the melodic bass playing by Steve.

On all songs the classic close harmony vocals sound like a sweet memory in my Heep ears.

Burning Ships & Still Paying My Dues fit John like a glove.

Blues...poignant blues, the way only John can sing the blues.
